Where Grief Met Grace

This was my first mission trip. I stumbled into joining this trip to Surabaya with three other Life Group members. It was a divine assignment. With no prior experience, I was just going to go with the flow and the hope of being amazed by God’s work in His harvest field. In the end, I was awed by how God brought together strangers and gelled them into a team for His mission. Each team member seamlessly complemented each other during the trip to complete tasks for the vacation Bible camp. Strangers became friends who teased, laughed, prayed and worshipped the Lord with our offering as one team –as one body of Christ.

Part of the mission trip entailed visiting a shelter for unwed mothers. I felt a sense of grief when we were at the shelter. The babies who were abandoned there really broke my heart, and I felt a sense of injustice for the young unwed mothers who were left to suffer alone, away from family support. Yet the Lord blessed and encouraged the unwed mothers when a sister in our team shared a very personal experience of her motherhood journey. I am certain our mission team was encouraged as well.

I did not intentionally identify an action item when we flew back. But after a good night’s sleep and conversation with the Lord in the morning, the Lord impressed upon my heart to provide support to Priska to complete her degree in midwifery so that she can be used to glorify God when she serves the unwed mothers shelter, the place where she was cared for as a baby. May my stewardship be pleasing to the Lord.
